In this editorial, Alexander discusses issues pertaining to women's participation in jazz. She looks at what educators can do to encourage female students to take part in instrumental jazz programs. In her research, she finds the following three primary factors that turn females away from jazz: (1) The masculine image of jazz; (2) The gender stereotypes of musical instruments, and; (3) The behavioral tendencies and preferences of girls and young women.
