The author details his method for teaching jazz guitar to college freshmen. He explains that he begins with the simple application of the 12-tone system to the fingerboard. Once students have mastered this, he introduces intervals, triads, seventh chords, extended and altered chords, and scales. He then moves to chord-tone only improvisation, and slowly introduces altered and other scales and modes.
