Dahlke introduces the jazz notebook method, a tool he developed for teaching students of all ages, particularly college undergraduates in the applied studio. The two pillars for practicing the method are mapping and implementation. Mapping involves the acquisition and development of vocabulary for use in jazz improvisation. Implementation is the process of applying this language to an improvisational context. Students should organize a binder into five sections: ii7-V7-I progressions, single-chord melodies, general patterns, chord progressions, and links. Suggestions for using the vocabulary in context are offered.
