An excerpt and adaptation from the author's 1999 dissertation "A Comparison of Jazz Studies Curricula in Master's
Programs in The United States" is presented. The composite picture that is provided of the typical graduate jazz
program in the US is based on collected data that appear in a majority of the jazz programs reviewed via
catalogs/handbooks, degree plans, and/or returned questionnaires. Through analysis of the data received, certain
findings, conclusions, and recommendations are noted. Jazz education appears to be headed into the future with a
strong, established tradition in academia. End notes are included.
