The Lenox School of Jazz, a summer program in Lenox, Massachusetts, held from 1957 to 1960, is profiled. The
school demonstrated that conscientious jazz musicians who know their instruments, the working conditions of
jazz, and who are intelligent and patient can accomplish much in three short weeks. The philosophy behind the
teaching style of the school is discussed, and the methods by which the teachers taught composition,
improvisation, and jazz history are described. The students and faculty gave concerts twice a week. Financial
challenges during 1961 caused the school to close before its fifth session. Endnotes are included.
