Profiles Sisters in Jazz, a group started by Marion Hayden, Diana Spradling, and Sunny Wilkinson in order to
"encourage and promote the participation of young women in the art of jazz music both educationally and
professionally through the implementation of a mentoring program." Describes the mentoring program and the
annual Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Competition. Comments on the changes that need to be made to curricula so that
female students will be trained with the same degree of rigor and commitment as the male students. Criticizes the
typical college and high school jazz program for its limited improvisational training and performing opportunities
for singers with instrumentalists.
