Reports on David Liebman's survey of 256 student jazz musicians since the late 1980s, noting that the goal of the
survey was multi-faceted: to collect some basic information about the backgrounds, listening habits, and other
influences that have informed these students' musical lives as well as cause them to reflect upon matters that
form one's world view. Includes a profile of respondents. Discusses the results of Liebman's attempt to ascertain
what drew students from around the world to jazz and who influenced them, focusing on family musical
background. Addresses Part II of the study, which focused on the students' views on issues, specifically the
relationship between jazz and their cultures. States that Part III focused on such issues as creativity and
originality; the relationship between jazz, other forms of music and the students' own cultures; and the influence of
art. Provides a list of several points that can be observed from the survey.
