Discusses the problem in many jazz ensembles in which the rhythm section functions as "some secondary
embellishment," especially the lack of attention to the bass chair. Provides examples of musical notation to
instruct bassists in shifting emphasis away from "focusing on playing the right notes and playing the written part
exactly" and instead creating a "feel" by playing the notes "at the right time."
