In a series of studies, data were collected pertaining to musicians' psychosocial anchorages (i.e., favorite musicians and tunes) and naive listener responses (i.e., verbal descriptions of and preferences for) to recorded music. Dixieland and Uptown traditional jazz musicians differed greatly in their psychosocial anchorages. Naive listeners also gave differing verbal descriptions of the music recorded by Uptown and Dixieland musicians, and expressed a preference for Dixieland. It is concluded that 2 schools/cultures of traditional jazz exist. The potential utility of the present methodology for the study of other social psychological issues is suggested. (27 ref)
