Defined as a « freely chosen » unpaid activity, work in voluntary associations is examined in relation to its potential influence on the gender division of labor. The paper begins with a case study of a jazz festival organised on the basis of voluntary work. Based on a description and analysis of gender differences in the types of activities undertaken and the amount of time allocated, the author suggests tentative directions for the study of voluntary work, not in relation to paid employment, as it is usually the case, but in relation to domestic labor.
