Latin jazz is the first major fusion movement in jazz history. Latin American musical elements began to take on an increasingly important role in the North American music industry in the early decades of the twentieth century, and were picked up particularly by jazz musicians in the 1940s. Due to large immigration flows from some Latin American countries to the USA, New York City in particular has become a hotspot of the Latin scene, in which v.a. Cuban and African-American musicians met with different musical idioms and styles and this led to the emergence of new, creative music styles. Latin jazz flourished in the US in the 1940s and 1950s and has been a significant influence on the music industry to this day. In addition to a historical and socio-cultural work-up, many associated music genres are described, central figures and their work illuminated, and exemplary works musically analyzed.
