The author, a jazz double bassist and educator, formed the Jim Widner Big Band in 1988, designed to run camps around the country in the same manner as Stan Kenton, with plenty of hands-on instruction with students of all different levels. As the years went by, the band saw increasing success, slowly adding camps around the country until Widner was programming eight weeks a year, from California down to the Gulf Coast in Alabama. The crew has been steady - the average band member has been on board for 15 years - and has grown into comfortably serving the needs of a variety of levels of musician. The Jim Widner Big Band celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013.
