Ways of creating contrapuntal skill in beginning to intermediate jazz pianists are discussed. Even when playing
homophonic music, skills in counterpoint are of great advantage to the pianist. The underlying voice-leading
present in so much of Western music frequently provides immense melodic content to inner and bass voices. A
pianist skilled in performing counterpoint may, for instance, have a greater tendency to play a chorale with a
"singing" sound and demonstrate pianistic control across the full range of a homophonic texture. Photographs and
