The Importance of Transcribing

Lilley believes that the biggest challenge for aspiring jazz musicians occurs when their playing lacks jazz
vocabulary or doesn't swing - or both. The benefits of transcribing, and the best techniques for doing so, are
discussed. To encourage spontaneity, free playing is recommended. Applying these techniques will require rational
thought and hard work on the part of the musician.
