Description of the history of jazz in Rotterdam and the nightlife of the port city from 1877 to the present. Shortly after the First World War the new music arrived on the young Coolsingel boulevard. During The Roaring Twenties, the Rotterdam jazz musicians acquired an international status. The city built the largest theaters and dance halls, such as the legendary Pschorr and the Grand Theater. Entertainment was at a quantitative high point during the Second World War and jazz music was in a paradoxical position. After Dolle Tuesday the music stopped in 'the city without men'. The years after the liberation were pure poverty and not just for jazz. Only in 1963 was there another American saxophonist on a Rotterdam stage. The new Doelen started a famous jazz festival. The concerts at the Harbor Jazz Club, B14, Dizzy, the Jazz Bunker and later Thelonious are illustrative of the rich palette of styles and genres that are characteristic of contemporary jazz. The renowned jazz education of Codarts, de Lantaren, Bird, North Sea Round Town and the North Sea Jazz Festival also placed Rotterdam on the international jazz menu.
