Drawing on folk and ethnic music traditions, the Panorama Jazz Band and the Zydepunks demonstrate how traditional music can be reinvented. In their continuing musical hybridity, these two groups draw new listeners to old traditions, while performing the creative synthesis that has the potential to recharge New Orleans. Interviews with each group's leader reveal the close identification of their music with New Orleans, their musical emphasis on dancing and the body, their incorporation of jazz‐related spontaneity and improvisation, and their representative resiliency, and commitment to and allegiance with New Orleans as the cultural space that both inspires and sustains their music.
