The behavior of people listening to classical music is markedly different from that of people listening to jazz. The reaction to a classical concert is entirely an implicit reaction, while the reaction to jazz is typically overt, consisting of rhythmical bodily movements. Musically there is not very much difference between the two forms; the difference must be sought in the psychological description just given. Jazz and classical music are different, and so jazz cannot be used in symphonic compositions which aim at an implicit type of response for which jazz is ill-fitted.
