Jazz in Deutschland. Zur Musikpolitik des nationalsozialistischen Regimes: Die mediale Darstellung des Jazz' im Dritten Reich (Jazz in Germany. On the Music Policy of the National Socialist Regime: The Media Presentation of Jazz in the Third Reich)

Bachelor thesis from 2015 in the Department of Cultural Studies - Europe, Leuphana University Lüneburg, Language: German, Abstract: Like hardly any other phase of German history, National Socialism has shaped many areas of life and culture as well. Jazz, as a music genre with Afro-American roots, was particularly affected by the ideological and racist ideas of the National Socialist regime in this context and experienced a circumcision that determined the musical development of the genre in Germany. But despite all attempts at repression, the jazz could not be banished by the Nazis from the German music world. National Socialist measures against the genre were sluggish, were in most areas uncoordinated and ran independently. At this point a contradiction between National Socialist ideology and the development of jazz in Germany becomes apparent. The present work follows this contradiction. For this purpose, selected chapters of German jazz history are used, which are decisive for the investigation. Since Germany already came into contact with jazz during the Weimar Republic, this historical section is included in the investigation, which results in a thematic subdivision into the areas of jazz in the Weimar Republic and, based on this, jazz in the Third Reich. The relationship of the National Socialists to the genre they so hated is illuminated by the music policy of the National Socialist regime, the media portrayal of jazz in the Third Reich and the development of jazz in the National Socialist camp system.
